Is the handwritten note a thing of the past?

It might just be me, but I genuinely feel a small flutter of excitement whenever post arrives for me, either at work or at home. Sadly, much of this ends up either in the recycling bin, or in the pile "to be paid", but every now and then something truly special arrives - a handwritten letter.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Luddite. I think technology is great and undoubtedly has improved innumerable aspects of modern life, but receiving something that someone has taken the time to physically craft, in their own inimitable style, is simply better.

I'm sure it is more than the tactility. There is a certain purity too. For example, this piece has not been a "one-take" edit. I've used the backspace button too many times to mention. However, when taking the time to write something in ink, one must be more thoughtful, careful and considered. There is a greater chance that the message will be more skillful, refined and maybe even more courteous, compared to its "cousins" the brash email or, worse still, the SMS IMHO (lol).

In my professional life, the handwritten note is an indispensable tool. I regularly pick up my pen and write to key stakeholders, donors etc. I've never asked them if they appreciate it, but I hope it conveys the right sentiments.

It would be interesting to hear what others think. Maybe I'm the exception rather than the rule for this one, but if you have a view, do let me know. You don't have to write, the comments box will be fine on this occasion.
